With over 25 years of experience across the stevedoring and maritime sectors, Russell is a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with exceptional insight into modern port design, as well as crane and container‑handling equipment. With an extensive knowledge of the maritime industry, he is also recognised for his expertise in engineering automation advice, crane design, strategy development and major project governance- making him a trusted specialist within WGA. 

After successfully establishing and growing WGA’s Brisbane office over the past six years as Queensland’s Joint Regional Manager, Russell now leads WGA’s Ports, Industrial and Resources market across New Zealand and the East Coast, supporting WGA’s continued growth. 

Hailing for the South Waikato/King Country rohe, Russell identifies as of Ngāti Mahuta/Ngāti Maniapoto decent. Born and raised in Aotearoa, his career kicked started as a graduate mechanical engineer in Christchurch, an experience he cites as one of the most formative of his career. He reflects with pride on being part of a disruptive start‑up, developing automated vacuum technology for ship mooring, an advancement transforming the global mooring process.  

Over the last 2 decades, Russell has worked extensively all around the world, including Australia, New Zealand the Netherlands, Finland, Ireland, China, and the Middle East. These international experiences have shaped his technical acumen, strengthened his ability to lead high‑performing teams across borders, time zones, and diverse operational environments. 

Russell is a proud advocate of diversity and social responsibility in and outside of the workplace- Championing indigenous uplift and CPSR invites. He is an active member of WGA’s Board sub-committee on ESG as well as the WHS committee.
