Joanne Ferry Senior Hydrogeologist
HKB
Based in Hawke’s Bay, Joanne is an accomplished hydrogeologist with over 12 years of experience in groundwater science and water resource management. Her work reflects a balance of technical acumen and a genuine dedication to sustainable freshwater management.
Raised in the Manawatū, New Zealand, Joanne’s fascination with the natural environment began early, exploring rivers and landscapes with her family. Initially drawn to freshwater ecology, a university field trip to an acid mine drainage site shifted her perspective. Seeing the intersection of geology and water systems firsthand, she realised her passion lay in hydrogeology—and the rest is history.
Joanne spent eight formative years in the mining industry, where she developed deep expertise in hydrogeological conceptualisation for pre-feasibility studies, particularly focusing on impacts to groundwater-dependent ecosystems. Her approach is grounded in strong technical foundations and a deep respect for the natural systems she works with.
Curiosity continues to drive Joanne’s work, especially around the diversity and innovation within groundwater science. A passionate advocate for mentorship and knowledge-sharing, she’s committed to ensuring that hydrogeological expertise is passed on to the next generation. To support this goal, she actively explores process innovations, believing that progress in the field depends on both technical excellence and collaboration.
