Ben Hope Structural Engineer
CHCH

With over eight years of experience, Ben has worked across a wide range of civil infrastructure and marine projects. His interest in engineering began in high school through CAD drawing, which led him to pursue a Diploma in Engineering. This early interest quickly evolved into a deeper fascination with technical design and problem solving, prompting him to complete a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and laying the foundation for his career in ports and marine infrastructure.

Ben’s project experience spans from 3D modelling mine sites in Africa to leading civil design on school and church rebuilds in Christchurch, to designing a mussel farming wharf in the Coromandel. He has contributed across all stages of the design process, from concept through to construction. His background as a Technician gives him a practical understanding of how things are built, supporting his focus on coordination and the delivery of clear, accurate drawings and 3D models. This hands-on experience strengthens his structural design capabilities and enables him to collaborate effectively across disciplines to solve complex problems with clarity and precision.

What drives Ben is the variety and challenge that engineering presents. Whether designing new infrastructure or developing bespoke repair solutions as part of asset management, he brings a focused and practical approach, with a strong commitment to doing things the right way.

A member of Engineering New Zealand (MEngNZ) and the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC), Ben is continually developing his technical capability. His passion for maritime engineering, design, and asset management will be instrumental in expanding WGA’s presence and capability in New Zealand.
