Waikato And Bay of Plenty
Water Permits
WGA collaborates closely with kiwifruit growers in the picturesque Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions of New Zealand, offering valuable assistance in resource consent planning. The region’s favourable soil and climate has sparked a surge in the establishment of new kiwifruit orchards and additional water requirements for established orchards. To enhance optimal growing conditions, growers frequently seek groundwater for irrigation during dry spells. However, securing resource consent is a prerequisite for tapping into local aquifers.
Our dedicated team is pivotal in supporting growers in harnessing groundwater for irrigation and frost protection in their kiwifruit orchards. Our technical assessments evaluate the potential environmental effects thoroughly. Before applying to take water, all applicants are required to construct bores and perform pumping tests. WGA meticulously analyses the aquifer test data, determining local aquifer hydraulic parameters and bore capacity, considering groundwater level responses in the designated production bore and observation bores.
These efforts culminate in comprehensive technical reports by WGA, offering a thorough evaluation of the impact on both the groundwater resource and connected surface water bodies. Our reports are then submitted to the respective regional councils, forming an integral part of the resource consent application process. Orchards supported by WGA experience the successful culmination of this process, having secured regional council approval to extract groundwater from their bores and proceed with developmental endeavours.
