The Project
A key component to New Zealand’s mussel industry, the Ariki Tahi Sugarloaf Wharf was identified as needing an upgrade. Due to rising sea levels, Ariki Tahi Sugarloaf Wharf Limited announced the intention to raise and extend the existing wharf, create four new berths to service the increased commercial industry vessels, and provide separate recreational boat facilities.
Technical Solutions
Working with McConnell Dowell as an ECI partner, WGA are the principal engineers for this project, providing the engineering design for the marine facilities, required breakwaters and revetments, dredging and reclamation.
The new wharf comprises of ~135m of new quay line with a maximum wall height of 7m. Allowance for a further 0.5m wall height has been made in design to account for future expansion of the wharf in line with sea level rise estimates.
The quay wall is made up of stacks of precast reinforced concrete blocks (manufactured by Cirtex), infilled with gravel. Hollow core blocks were adopted to reduce the mass of the units and minimise requirements for heavy cranage, which have significant impacts to cost and staging with operations during construction.

The upgrade to Ariki Tahi Sugarloaf Wharf will address the current and future needs for the aquaculture sector, marine farmers, and truck operators, provide separate commercial and recreational facilities to enhance the health and safety for all users, and ensure resilience for future sea level rises driven by climate change.
