The Project
With the aim of future-proofing water supply at Discovery Farm near Taupō, Pāmu Farms set out to find a more reliable, scalable solution than their existing surface water take. It was identified that a groundwater take would be ideal to support their growing demand for dairy farm operations, staff amenities, and stock drinking water. That’s where WGA stepped in—bringing hydrogeological expertise to quantify the reality of transitioning to a new water source.
Technical Solutions
WGA delivered a comprehensive hydrogeological assessment, drawing on regional data and previous investigations.
Three drilling sites were assessed, with one emerging as the front-runner. The site boasted a balanced trio of infrastructure access, aquifer depth, and low interference risk. Using regional data and pumping test results, WGA calculated minimal impact on neighbouring bores—even at peak abstraction rates. The Maroa Group ignimbrites stood out as the most promising aquifer, offering strong flow potential beneath the Taupō Pumice layer.
WGA designed a robust aquifer test to meet Waikato Regional Council’s requirements, ensuring a smooth consent pathway.
